The iPhone goes beyond a communication tool, as it can even be used to enhance your personal safety. Here are the best that can help keep you protected.

Whether you are a college student navigating your way home in the darkness from the strip, or in need of comfort when you find yourself in sketchy places and situations, downloading a personal safety app to your favorite iOS device can provide peace of mind. With immediate communication and access to help in an emergency, it could be just what you need to feel safe in an unwary situation.

As with all safety products, make sure you test apps in advance to ensure they work efficiently in a true emergency when you really need them.

Here are some of the best apps to improve your personal safety in 2023.

Noonlight uses advanced technology to get emergency help with just the release of a button.

This personal safety app is easy to use, and uses a “dead man’s switch” principle. In an unsafe situation, you press and hold a button to confirm that you are OK, and a response is triggered if you let go of the button before you can disarm it.

When you reach your destination, you can release the button and enter a PIN to disarm it. However, if you’re suddenly in danger, you can release the button without entering the PIN, which triggers a response from local police and emergency personnel.

Noonlight is perfect for meeting strangers you have connected with online from online dating to online marketplace exchanges. The app allows users to add a note to their timeline, and create a safety network of contacts who can track your movement and alert authorities in emergency situations.

In cases of emergency, Noonlight will also provide vital information to first responders— photo, age, medical conditions, etc. to help responders provide immediate and efficient care.

Noonlight is free to download on the App Store. The cost of services range from $1.99 for SafeTrek to $29.99 for a premium subscription.

Kuo doubles down on iPhone 15 Pro having no physical buttons

Buttons on the side of an iPhone

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has again claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro will switch to solid-state buttons, but this time saying supply chain sources have identified the component manufacturer.

In October 2022, Kuo said that the “volume button and power button” of the Pro editions of the iPhone 15 range would cease to be physical buttons. He compared them to the home button on the iPhone SE 2, which does not physically press down, but gives taptic feedback as if it does.

Now he’s chiefly repeating the same detail, but says it comes from his latest survey. For the first time, Kuo’s sources also specify that Cirrus Logic will be what he calls “the primary winner” from Apple’s move.

Previously, Kuo has said he expects Android manufacturers to follow suit. This time he’s predicting more generally that “if users respond well… I think it may be adopted in other high-end models of product lines in the future.”

The volume and sleep/wake buttons reside on the edges of the iPhone chassis, and that chassis has been the subject of rumors about other redesigns. It’s predicted that the iPhone 15 range will see a rounded edge design, and may be made of titanium instead of the current, heavier stainless steel.

iPhone SE 4 allegedly canceled over Apple’s 5G modem failures

Starlight iPhone SE

Apple wanted to release an iPhone SE 4 in 2024 as a test bed for its in-house modem chip, but development failures may have led to the cancellation of the budget iPhone.

The rumored iPhone SE 4 was expected to be released within a few years, and would resemble the iPhone XR. However, a new report casts doubt on the next iPhone SE making it through the production pipeline.

A new report from supply chain analyst and leaker Ming-Chi Kuo suggests Apple has canceled the iPhone SE 4 rather than just delayed it. The new iPhone SE was allegedly going to use Apple’s in-house baseband chip first, but now Qualcomm will likely continue to be Apple’s sole supplier.

Apple has been reportedly working on its own 5G modem, or baseband chip, for its iPhone lineup. It was meant to go in the iPhone 15, but failed to reach the necessary specs in time for consideration.

The iPhone SE 4 cancellation is said to be a direct result of a failure in Apple’s modem development. Kuo says Apple was concerned that the in-house baseband chip would not be up to par with Qualcomm’s.

Ultimately, it seems Qualcomm will be the 5G modem supplier for the next two generations of iPhone. Market consensus says otherwise, however, and expected Qualcomm to start losing orders to Apple by 2024.

It isn’t clear why Apple would base the iPhone SE 4’s development on the success of its in-house modem. The current iPhone SE is a popular product thanks to its low price and retention of the Home Button, so it seems Apple would benefit from having a refreshed budget option at some point.

Even if the iPhone SE 4 that looks like an iPhone XR might be canceled, a budget option could still be announced in the next few years. At the least, Apple could update the internal processor in the existing iPhone SE to keep a Touch ID model modern.

iPhone 15 Ultra: What it may look like, and what to expect in 2023

iPhone 15 Ultra to have a new curved edge

AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site.

The iPhone 15 Ultra is a bit less than a year away, but reports are already pouring in about what to expect. Here’s what the rumor mill thinks is coming, and a first glance at what it may look like.

Rumors about the iPhone 15 lineup began in the middle of 2022. Despite the early start, they have been much more realistic than early iPhone 14 rumors.

The generational jump for the iPhone 14 Pro was a little wider than others. Cameras were improved across the board, a new cutout for the sensor housing was introduced, and the display gained always-on capabilities.

However, Apple didn’t change the external design by much. The Dynamic Island is an interesting software feature, but little else is noticeable unless the iPhone camera bumps are side-by-side.

Rumors suggest the iPhone 15 Pro will get some significant external design alterations along with much-needed upgrades. The 6.7-inch iPhone Pro Max may be referred to as the “Ultra,” which is the focus of this rumor roundup.

Rumored iPhone 15 Ultra design

Apple tends to find a design it likes and stick with it for several years. The current flat-sided design debuted with the iPhone 12, and while some elements have changed, it has remained mostly the same.

A curved edge made from titanium would have a premium look and feel

A curved edge made from titanium would have a premium look and feel

The iPhone 15 Ultra is expected to iterate on this design by curving the bottom edge. The sides will remain flat, but the part that connects to the back glass would resemble the corner of a MacBook Pro.

The back would still be made from glass so MagSafe and wireless charging could work. But the edges are rumored to be made from titanium.

This would make the phone lighter but tougher overall. The curved edge would also provide more protection from drops.

The camera bump may need to shift to accommodate the curved edge

The camera bump may need to shift to accommodate the curved edge

Until more rumors are shared, we expect the camera bump to remain the same. It may have to shift to accommodate the new curved edges depending on how Apple implements the design.

Rumored iPhone 15 Ultra features

Outside of design changes, there are some increasingly obvious feature updates coming too. A port transition is expected, and Apple may finally improve its telephoto camera.

USB-C port, Thunderbolt

Apple’s move to USB-C has been predicted for years, but, for the iPhone 15, it may not be a choice. The EU has passed a law forcing smartphone manufacturers to adopt the universal port, and Apple has to comply by 2024.

The iPhone 15 Ultra could finally get USB-C with Thunderbolt speeds

The iPhone 15 Ultra could finally get USB-C with Thunderbolt speeds

Some had speculated that Apple would go port-less before adopting USB-C, claiming that Lightning and MagSafe were necessary proprietary fixtures. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as the transition to USB-C has already begun in other products.

Moving to a USB-C port doesn’t guarantee faster speeds, but rumors suggest the port will offer more than convenience. Apple could use the USB 4/Thunderbolt spec in the iPhone 15 Pro, at least according to Ming-Chi Kuo.

That would allow wired data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, an approximate 80x increase over the USB 2.0 speeds used by iPhone today. Thunderbolt speeds would be a massive improvement for creatives, especially those working with massive ProRes video files.

Two selfie cameras

The iPhone has only one front-facing camera alongside an array of sensors used for Face ID, but that could change in 2023. The 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Ultra is rumored to have two selfie cameras.

Two selfie cameras could mean improved portrait mode shots

Two selfie cameras could mean improved portrait mode shots

This addition would be limited to the larger iPhone, likely due to space considerations. So, the smaller iPhone 15 Pro would likely retain the dot-dash Dynamic Island cutout.

Two selfie cameras could serve multiple purposes, perhaps for better depth data collection or a wider depth of field. The rumor didn’t specify what this hardware would be used for.

Apple may want to differentiate its most expensive “Ultra” model since the standard iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro will all likely have a Dynamic Island with no notch.

One rumor suggests that Apple could hide Face ID components below the display, which would change how the Dynamic Island would display itself in software. That change could be tied to adding a second selfie camera, but it isn’t clear if the rumors are related.

Periscoping telephoto lens

Rumors of a periscope telephoto lens have been around for years. It seems Apple is working on the technology internally, but it never makes the final cut.

The telephoto camera could get a big upgrade with a periscope lens

The telephoto camera could get a big upgrade with a periscope lens

The iPhone 15 Ultra could get a periscope lens for much better optical zoom. Ming-Chi Kuo seems to suggest the lens would only be used in the iPhone 15 Ultra model, then the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Ultra would both get the periscope lens.

The technology works by stacking a series of lenses “folded” so it fits vertically within the iPhone case. A mirror reflects the image from the outward-facing lens and optically zooms using the periscope-like lens stack.

Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers have been using periscope lenses for years, so Apple would be entering the market with a more mature initial version. It could enable zoom ranges like a modest 10x optical zoom or even the incredible 100x zoom found in some smartphones.

Other rumors

In September 2021, Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the iPhone 15 would get an under-display Touch ID sensor. He pulled back that rumor in March 2022, stating that the 2023 and 2024 iPhones wouldn’t have the feature, as Face ID with a mask is a good-enough solution.

Apple will likely stick with Face ID, no Touch ID for iPhone 15

Apple will likely stick with Face ID, no Touch ID for iPhone 15

Kuo also stated in an October 2022 note that iPhone 15 could get solid-state buttons. They would replace the physical volume and power buttons, which may increase device rigidity and water resistance.

Sony to provide new camera sensors that improve exposure clipping at the high and low ends. This would reduce overexposure or underexposure in certain settings.

iPhone 15 Ultra release date window

Apple tends to announce its iPhone lineup during a September Apple Event. Depending on supply chain constraints, all models could release at the same time or take a staggered approach based on availability.

Expect the iPhone 15 Ultra to cost a premium with its new design, periscope lens, and other improved technologies. High-end models with 2TB of storage could cost well over $2,000.

iPhone 15 may be 35% more power efficient with new TSMC 3nm chip

iPhone 15 Ultra to have a new curved edge

AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site.

As it officially launches mass production of 3nm processors which are expected in the iPhone 15 and new Macs, TSMC has boasted of greater power efficiency, associated with more speed.

As expected, TSMC held a ceremony on Thursday to mark the official start of production. According to Bloomberg, executives used the event to make claims about what 3nm processors will mean for future devices.

The company’s chair, Mark Liu, also spoke of plans for the following generation using a 2nm manufacturing process. Liu referred to 2nm processors as part of a speech saying both that TSMC is confident of the future, and that it will continue to work in Taiwan despite building plants elsewhere.

“The semiconductor industry will grow rapidly over the next decade,” he said, “and Taiwan will surely play an even more critical role in the global economy.”

TSMC 3nm launch ceremony. Source: Lam Yik Fei/Bloomberg

TSMC 3nm launch ceremony. Source: Lam Yik Fei/Bloomberg

The advantage of 3nm processors over the current 4nm and 5nm ones, is that they can offer better performance, but definitely do so with greater power efficiency. Lui claims that TSMC’s new 3nm processors are faster by an unspecified amount, and that it brings 35% more power efficiency.

Historically, each new generation of Apple’s A-series processors, has brought a speed increase of between 10% and 25% between generations. Power efficiency increase is harder to quantify, based on all the external factors that impact it.

Lui says that demand for 3nm chips is “very strong,” though he did not specify who is buying them. Apple is TSMC’s largest customer, accounting for about 26% of the processor firm’s revenue in 2021.

Consequently, it’s expected that Apple will be a major customer for 3nm chips. Separately, it’s recently been reported that Apple will be the first to use TSMC’s 3nm processors, though it had also been predicted it would be in a 2022 M2 MacBook Pro.

iPhone Self Repair Program, Twitter, Studio Display webcam ‘fix’ – Apple’s April 2022 in review

AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site.

In April 2022, while most of the world’s attention was on Elon Musk buying Twitter, Apple quietly launched its self-service repair program, and Apple may or may not have fixed the Studio Display‘s webcam.

If you don’t happen to know this already, you’ve just seen it in action in April 2022. There is a Goldilocks pricing strategy where a company will sell something at three different prices.

It’s similar to how Apple has promoted good, better, and best options before. But the first price is very low so that Apple or whoever can claim that they offer an affordable product.

The company has worked it so that no one buys this cheapest option, and if anyone does, they find out it’s lacking something vital. Then there’s the middle price, which is expensive but has what most people need.

And then there’s the most expensive one, but its only real purpose is to make the middle one seem cheaper. The company knows few people will ever buy the top-price version, but it’s hardly any skin off the company’s nose if they do.

In April 2022, Apple launched its promised self-service repair program, but its purpose is to achieve many things other than being a repair service. There will be people who buy or rent its toolkit to make repairs on their iPhones, but very few.

Instead, the program answers Apple’s critics, giving the appearance that it’s given a victory to Right to Repair fans, though it’s really made it harder for them to protest. It’s also got Apple ahead of likely new legislation, too.

But the biggest thing it’s going to do is take its place in the Goldilocks price range. Seeing the cost and then the complexity of any repair job you can do with it, most people will instead send their broken iPhones to an Apple Store.

Depending on what’s wrong with the iPhone, some people may just buy a replacement. Apple can live with that.

Apple's new self repair program toolkit. If only it were available in blue.

Apple’s new self repair program toolkit. If only it were available in blue.

Apple still fixes things itself

Quite apart from the issue of what you can repair in an iPhone, what it will cost, and whether you’ll ever bother, April also saw Apple doing a fix. The promised software update for the Studio Display came. The one Apple let us believe would fix that monitor’s webcam problems.

Now we’ve got the release, everyone’s noticing in retrospect that Apple had stopped short of actually promising a fix. Instead, Apple just said it would look at the problem and improve the situation.

Looked at from that way, the new update did the job. The webcam is improved.

It isn’t fixed, though. And now we see that it never can be — because people’s complaints about its quality are caused by the physics of what lens Apple chose to put in there.

Apple's Studio Display

Apple’s Studio Display

It is better now, and the webcam isn’t horrendous, and Apple has always used poorer FaceTime cameras, but it doesn’t seem to stop people from buying Macs. But this is a case where Apple’s original hyperbole about the quality of every aspect of Studio Display has led to disappointment.

Smaller launches and un-launches

That Studio Display was a big launch for Apple in March 2022, and it got a lot of fans as its shipping slipped on into April. But for April itself, Apple did make a few smaller launches, all of which were lighter than the 79 pounds of the self-repair service toolkit.

Whereas for businesses, Apple launched a webinar to help people take up its new Apple Business Essentials. It’s Apple’s mobile device management program and if you thought about it at all, you’ve figured it’s Apple’s competitor to Jamf.

You would be wrong. Not because Jamf says no, no, it’s fine, but because it’s actually Apple’s competitor to Jamf — and also its replacement for Fleetsmith.

You haven’t heard of device management service Fleetsmith, and now it’s too late.

Take a look while you can, this is Fleetsmith, Apple's previous device management service

Apple bought it in 2020, and in April 2022, announced that it was ending. If you’re using it, you’ve got until October to high tail it out of there, and if you’re not, you can no longer join up.

If that was Apple’s un-launch for the month, YouTube beats it with how thoroughly it unlaunched iPhone Picture-in-Picture after an extended beta test. But then said it hadn’t ditched it, we would all be getting it in days.

Having an App Store award won’t keep your app on the store if it hasn’t been updated lately

Apple, for its part, chose to tell developers that they had 30 days to update their old apps or they would be pulled from the App Store. Then after a lot of protests, Apple said okay, okay, call it 90 days.

In comparison, one event this month went according to plan.

Elon Musk buys Twitter

First he came for some Twitter shares, and we said nothing. Then he became a Twitter director, and we said nothing — except “pardon?” when he changed his mind about that.

Elon Musk doesn't hang about

Elon Musk doesn’t hang about

Maybe it’s just that Musk finally visited the director’s canteen and decided it had to be improved. Or perhaps he was always working to a plan, because after the shares and director shuffle, Musk announced he wanted to buy Twitter outright.

There was a corporate “poison pill” legal and financial trick used to make him change his mind, but as interesting as the details were, they didn’t work.

The Twitter directors who were so against him buying the company that they concocted this poison pill legal approach are now fulsomely welcoming Musk.

Musk says he believes Twitter shouldn’t limit free speech. So he came for Twitter, and we can say anything.

Exit Apple, stage right

Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter has already seen high-profile tweeters leave the service. It’s seen low-profile, and even vanished, previous tweeters come back.

Apple is quite keen on this privacy idea

Apple is quite keen on this privacy idea

Sometimes only temporarily, sometimes only briefly, but Musk is changing what people think of Twitter and what they want it to be.

Similarly, Apple presumably wanted the State Privacy and Security Coalition (SPSC) to be what it claimed, an advocate for privacy. In April 2022, Apple said no, this group is pushing for poor legislation that offers at best weak privacy.

It was a simpler time

Privacy does seem to have been a concern for Apple since its very founding. But Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak doubtlessly never expected to be running a TV station, not least one with critically-acclaimed shows.

They also couldn’t have spent a lot of waking hours worrying about it, as by April 2022, Apple would be involved in far more legal cases than it has currently-shipping products.

Equally, Tim Cook and the rest of today’s Apple executives would be forgiven for thinking fondly of the past. And this month, two things happened to help them.

Apple Museum Poland was announced in April 2022 and reportedly is home to 1600 items related to the “history and development” of Apple products.

If Cook and co can’t go to Warsaw to see the museum’s collection, it won’t be because they can’t afford the airfare. But even as preparing for June’s WWDC might be keeping them busy, any Apple executive with a long memory — or you — can now relish a glimpse of the past.

Developer Felix Rieseberg launched the ability to run fully-working versions of Mac System 7, and Mac OS 8, in a web browser. Honoring the production schedules of times gone by, Rieseberg said the release was part of #MARCHintosh2020, but brought it out on April 1.

No fool, his version of a Mac emulator brought many a user back to the 1990s, and distracted us from waiting for May 2022.

Apple Music Sing turns iPhone & Apple TV into karaoke machine

Apple Music has a new extra called Apple Music Sing, which lets subscribers sing along, replace the lead singer, or perform a duet.

Apple has announced a new Apple Music service, but it’s not the classical one it’s promised for before the end of the year. Instead, it’s Apple Music Sing, which leverages Apple Music’s lyrics to provide a Karaoke-style experience.

“Apple Music’s lyrics experience is consistently one of the most popular features on our service,” Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats, said in a statement. “We already know our users all over the world love to follow along to their favorite songs, so we wanted to evolve this offering even further to enable even more engagement around music through singing.”

“It’s really a lot of fun,” insists Schusser, “our customers are going to love it.”

More than presenting the main song lyrics on screen as it can now, Apple Music Sing will optionally show “multiple lyric views.” It will enable users to “take the lead, perform duets, sing backup, and more.”

With a new Adjustable Vocals feature, users can control a song’s vocal levels. The real singer can be silenced enough for the user to take over, or dipped enough for that user to perform backing vocals.

The Karaoke feature will not be available for the whole of Apple Music’s library. Rather, a “suite of more than 50 dedicated companion playlists” is being launched. They will each feature “all of the epic songs, duets, choruses, and anthems that have been compelling people all around the world to sing.”

Apple Music Sing is free to Apple Music subscribers worldwide. It launches later in December, and will be available on iPhone, iPad, and the Apple TV 4K.

It appears to be specifically the Apple TV 4K that is required — reportedly, older Apple TV sets are not supported.
