Easy-to-use mobile app cuts cost on fisheries data collection

An easy-to-use mobile application by Uganda researches is now cutting the cost of data collection and analysis in the country’s fishery sector by almost 80 per cent as compared to the previous manual system.

Through the mobile app, electronic Catch Assessment Survey (e-CAS), over 670 Ugandan stakeholders of the fish value chain are accessing comprehensive fisheries data from Lakes Albert and Victoria, in real time.

According to Patrick Bwire, systems administrator at the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI), since the system was set up, over 12,000 data records have been easily documented and consolidated at cheaper cost.

The previous manual approach cost the government about USh400 million (US$106,340) per year, according to Bwire, but e-CAS has brought the cost down to around USh80 million (US$21,270),” said Bwire adding that it would normally take two days to physically carry out and look at the census of the boats and the fish landed to make an estimate of the fish stocks.

Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO), with financing from EU Implementation of Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) project and Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project Phase Two (LVEMP-II), has been coordinating CAS on a regular basis from 2005 to 2015. However, due to the high cost of implementing the survey and limited funding, no CAS was conducted after 2015.

CAS has now resumed since the launch of e-CAS on 6th March 2020 in Nairobi and its recent adoption in Uganda.

The country’s lake management officials, researchers, and policymakers, among others, now can freely access fish value chain information to make informed decisions around fisheries management.

Trained data collectors consult with fishers to update the app with data such as fish catch quantity, type of fishing nets and boats used, and how much money the fishers expect to earn.

Data accommodation

With the potential to accommodate an unlimited number of data sets including fisheries surveys, aquaculture, socio-economics, and marketing, the system is an invaluable resource for the sustainable development of fisheries for wealth creation, employment, and food security.

“Before the app, we used papers to ask questions to the fishers. It was a tiresome job because it took a lot of time and could take weeks before an official agent would collect the files,” says Ocakacon Muhammed, a trained data collector based at Lake Albert.

Peter Enyou, another enumerator at Kikondo landing site on Lake Victoria, explains that the previous system often led to data inaccuracies, “With the paper system, someone could just sit at home and guess where a boat had been and what fish were caught, but with the e-CAS technology and GPS coordinates, even head office in the city knows where the boats are, so enumerators cannot make it up.”

The system design

The system is designed for real time data capture, analysis and timely reporting. It consists of two synergistic applications namely mobile and web.

The mobile is mainly to serve as a data capture in the field while the web application is best suited for reporting and system management.

e-CAS is now freely accessible through the Google Play Store and the benefits of the technology were immediately recognized by the NutriFish project in Uganda.

NutriFish, funded by the International Development Research Centre, Canada, and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, has developed and customized e-CAS to suit the local context by, for example, including local names for fish species.

“Under NutriFish, e-CAS was piloted at six landing sites on Lake Albert and further expanded to three landing sites on Lake Victoria in 2022,” says Jackson Efitre of the NutriFish project.



Transfer applications mostly come from wealthy areas, Common App finds

  • Only 6% of college transfer applicants who used the Common App in the last four years have lived in zip codes with the lowest median household income.
  • That’s according to data released Monday by the Common App, the online portal enabling students to use a single form to apply to hundreds of institutions. It also found public flagship institutions and large, private nonprofit colleges were the most popular destinations for transfer applicants.
  • The number of transfer applications has ticked up since the platform started offering them in the 2018-19 academic year. Common App saw 216,590 transfer applications that year, rising 17.2% to 253,815 in 2021-22, the most recent year available.

Dive Insight:

Researching application behavior among college transfers is notoriously difficult, in part because federal sources of information — like the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, or IPEDS — don’t collect applicant data on students who aren’t enrolling for the first time.

Colleges’ Common Data sets contain some of this information, but institutions must publish it voluntarily. These are summaries of enrollment, application and retention numbers, as well as the factors colleges consider during admissions.

Thus, the Common App report summarizing transfer findings provides a glimpse into trends that aren’t completely understood.

The organization said in the report that it is “somewhat concerning” wealthier students are primarily the ones taking advantage of the transfer process. Transfer processes “should reflect educational mobility for all students, especially for historically excluded groups,” the report states.

In the 2021-22 year, nearly 70% of the Common App’s member colleges that use it for first-year students also relied on it for transfer applicants.

Colleges with admit rates under 25% received the largest share of transfer applications annually for the last four years. For 2021-22, 3 in 10 transfer applications went to institutions with admit rates under 25%, while the smallest share, 16%, went to colleges with admit rates between 25% and 50%. 

The organization noted in its report that “the tendency to apply to large, selective institutions is not a new phenomenon for Common App applicants, transfer or first-year.”

About one-fourth of applicants year to year were from underrepresented minority groups, which Common App considers to be students who are Black, Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander. 

More than half of applicants every year were from zip codes with the highest median household income, the organization found.

App Store pricing upgrades have expanded to all purchase types – Latest News


In December, we announced the most comprehensive upgrade to pricing capabilities since the App Store first launched, including additional price points and new tools to manage pricing by storefront. Starting today, these upgrades and new prices are now available for all app and in‑app purchase types, including paid apps and one‑time in‑app purchases.

  • More flexible price points. Choose from 900 price points — nearly 10 times the number of price points previously available for paid apps and one‑time in‑app purchases. Specify a country or region you’re familiar with as the basis for globally equalized prices across the other 174 storefronts and 43 currencies for paid apps and one‑time in‑app purchases.   • Regional options for availability. Define the availability of in‑app purchases (including subscriptions) by storefront, so you can deliver content and services customized for each market.

Get ready for enhanced global pricing updates in May

The App Store’s global equalization tools provide a simple and convenient way to manage pricing across international markets. On May 9, 2023, pricing for existing apps and one‑time in‑app purchases will be updated across all 175 App Store storefronts to take advantage of new enhanced global pricing. The updated prices will be globally equalized to your selected base country or region using publicly available exchange rate information from financial data providers. These price points will also follow the most common conventions in each country or region so that prices are more relevant to customers.

You can now update your current pricing to take advantage of the enhanced global pricing using App Store Connect or the App Store Connect API. If you haven’t made price updates for your existing apps and one‑time in‑app purchases by May 9, Apple will update them for you using your current price in the United States as the basis. Starting now, app developers can select between over 900 price points to charge customers for any App Store purchase — even whole numbers like $1 are supported.

That means customers will see a lot more apps that cost $1 instead of the classic $0.99, and in-app purchases can go as low as $0.10. The highest a developer can charge for something is $10,000, though that requires special permission from Apple.

Apps are placed into groups based on their App Store category, business model, and download volume to ensure relevant comparisons. Using industry-leading differential privacy techniques, peer group benchmarks provide relevant and actionable insights — all while keeping the performance of individual apps private.

New App Store benchmarks let devs compare app performance to peers


Developers have new analytics tools



Apple has added peer group benchmarks for developers using app analytics in their App Store offerings to let them compare performance to similar apps.

It lets developers put their app’s performance into context by comparing it to similar apps in the App Store. Apps are grouped based on their App Store category, business model, and download volume to ensure relevant comparisons.

Taking action on peer group benchmarks means developers can compare performance results across several important metrics, including conversion rate, day one, day seven, and day 28 retention rate, crash rate, and average proceeds per paying user. They are defined in the same way as the standard app metrics and displayed in weekly intervals.

For example, the App Analytics dashboard displays the statistics from the selected date range and the estimated percentage difference from the previous period of the same time. The dashboard is within the App Store Connect tool for user app acquisition, usage, and monetization data.

This allows developers to improve their conversion rate, set up a product page optimization test, create custom product pages, localize app and product usage, and more.
